A charter bus carrying 15 members of a church group from Albuquerque, New Mexico crashed in Colorado while returning from the Steubenville Youth Conference in Denver. There were ten high-school aged kids and five adults on board. Two people were killed and 13 people were injured when the bus driver lost control and crashed into a bridge support and veered off the highway.
The 22-year-old bus driver was ejected from the bus and was killed. Authorities believe he may have an unspecified medical condition that contributed to the crash. Officials have not released the name of the driver or identified the other victim.
When emergency responders arrived on the scene, most of the passengers had managed to get out of the mangled bus, but five people were still trapped inside. Rescue workers were able to extract them, and they were rushed to nearby hospitals.
Officials are continuing to investigate the crash.
“We do express our condolences out to the families and the victims that are involved in this,” said Sgt. Blake White, Colorado State Patrol spokesperson.
