Trump Names Robert O'Brien New National Security Adviser

ASAP Rocky Assault Trial Resumes In Stockholm

One week after John Bolton was fired as National Security Adviser, President Donald Trump announced Bolton's replacement: Robert O'Brien, a State Department official who specializes in hostage issues, saying he would "do a great job!"

"I am pleased to announce that I will name Robert C. O’Brien, currently serving as the very successful Special Presidential Envoy for Hostage Affairs at the State Department, as our new National Security Advisor," Trump tweeted Wednesday morning. "I have worked long & hard with Robert. He will do a great job!"

Most recently, Trump sent O'Brien to Sweden as a 'special envoy' after rapper A$AP Rocky was detained by authorities there last month. Trump took an interest in Rocky's case after he was charged with assault in connection with a fight between his entourage and a 19-year-old man in Stockholm last June.

Trump tweeted several times in favor of A$AP Rocky, lobbying the Swedish government for the rapper's release. O'Brien was sent by Trump to Sweden to observe the rapper's trial and wrote to prosecutors asking them to release the rapper.

O'Brien replaced John Bolton, who was fired after the administration "disagreed with many of [Bolton's] suggestions."

Bolton had a turbulent tenure while acting as Trump's national security adviser, as he repeatedly clashed with other senior administration officials. According to a report in the Washington Post, Bolton was sidelined after voicing discontent with Trump's attempts to end the war in Afghanistan. Bolton had also reportedly voiced doubts about the president's secret plan to host peace talks with the Taliban during the week of 9/11 at Camp David.
