American swimmer Katie Ledecky teased a potential return for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics after winning gold in the women's 1500-meter freestyle final on Wednesday (July 31).
“I’ve been consistent over these last few months and last few years in saying that I would love to compete in L.A. and that hasn’t changed,” Ledecky said via ESPN. “That could change. I mean, you never know. So, I really just take it year by year at this point and I really haven’t thought much beyond this week in terms of what my fall is going to look like, what my next year is going to look like. But yeah, I don't feel like I'm close to being finished in the sport yet."
Ledecky set a new Olympic record with a time of 15:30.02, finishing a full 10 seconds ahead of her competition with France's Anastasiia Kirpichnikova placing second at 15:40.35 and Germany's Isabel Gose finishing third at 15:41.16. The 27-year-old tied fellow Jenny Thompson in both career gold medals (8) and total medals won (12) in Olympic play with her record-setting victory.
Ledecky now owns the 20 fastest times in the history of the women's 1500-meter freestyle, with her newest Olympic record-setting time only ranking eighth all-time. The Washington, D.C. native previously won bronze in the 400-meter freestyle during the opening night of the 2024 Paris Olympics on Saturday (July 27).
